John Heyman, of Sports Illustrated, has some interesting notes in today’s article. Let’s summarize:
- According to Heyman, one unnamed American League executive predicted the Angels would now try to move Gary Matthews, Jr. “if they can.” This makes sense given the outrageous deal they recently gave Torii Hunter. Replace one fleece with another, right?
- Rangers pitcher Vicente Padilla is apparently on the block. Padilla is entering the second year of a 3 year, $33.75M contract (with a 2010 option). That contract is a lot more attractive than the free agency options like Kyle Lohse, who wants $40M over 4 years.
- Regarding the Mets, Heyman believes GM Omar Minaya is real interested in Livan Hernandez, that Lastings Milledge will probably be traded (no speculation on the receiving team, though) and that the Mets are interested in acquiring Brian Schneider from Washington. Hey, how about Milledge/Estrada for Cordero/Schneider? Thoughts? Too much of a fleece for the Mets?

I like the idea of trying to move Padilla, on the Rangers part. And I agree with their thinking. That said, I wouldn’t want the guy…
Put Padilla in a pitchers park and he’ll be a quality 3rd starter. Somebody like the Mets or Padres should fire him up.
How about Padilla, Laird, and 6 million to the mets (making Padilla an 8 mil a year pitcher, which could be a steal) for one of those outfield prospects and a decent pitching prospect.. just get Padilla out of Texas please.. Ive seen enough. To me the development of German Duran makes Kinsler our biggest trading chip and if we could hook up with the Marlins or Giants to get Lowry or Willis.. seems like a pefrect match..?
I think the Mets would be saving those OF prospects for a bigger deal… for a Johan, Haren or Blanton. They would also need a pitching prospect to throw in such a deal too. Plus, they also have Castro and Estrada in the mix at C. That’s not to say the Rangers won’t get a decent offer for Padilla, as the FA pitching market SUCKS! Trading Kinsler is a nice idea as well…
We just want one of the outfield prospects, the rest you can trade for johan, and scrap the pitching prospect, we dont need it, just take Padilla please.. Hows 8 million sound?
I’d take a flyer on Padilla as a #5 starter type. A rotation of Haren, Pedro, Maine, Perez and Padilla would be fine with me.
The only way GMJ is traded is if the Angels find a moron, or pay, i don’t know, %40 of that contract at least..
Yea, Gary Matthews isnt going anywhere. After further review, I just don’t see anyone taking him on.
