White Sox ship Garland to LAA for Cabrera

j-garland.jpgo-cabrera.jpg In a trade just moments ago, the Chicago White Sox sent SP Jon Garland to Anaheim for SS Orlando Cabrera.

Interesting…..

Kinda makes you scratch your head for both sides here. Chicago just brought back Uribe to play SS, but could move him to 2B now, which would shore up that infield. Anaheim has little to no offense aside from Vlad and now that is going to get even worse! Cabrera was responsible for a .301 BA, 8 HR, 86 RBI and 101 runs scored. Who fills that void now?

As for Garland, he is a solid SP. Throws strikes and finds ways to win games. Is he a difference maker? No. But he does fit in nicely behind Lackey and Escobar.

Too early to tell who got fleeced as this might open the Angels up to deal a SP to Florida for M. Cabrera as well as clear some payroll. The Angels will likely slide one of their kids into SS (maybe Aybar).

  1. Not a bad deal, but I agree with you, I’m not sure it makes much sense for either team. The last thing the Angels could afford to lose is a solid bat, and Cabrera was one of their best the last 2 years, and plays premium defense. The Angels have solid pitching with Lackey, Escobar and Weaver as is. And the White Sox have Uribe, as you said. But if Cabrera plays SS and Uribe moves to 2B (likely), I like this deal as a fleece for the Sox.
