According to the Richard Justice, the Houston Astros appear to be closing in on 2B Kaz Matsui. The Astros had been reportedly targeting Luis Castillo (who has signed a 4-year deal with the NY Mets), but they have since turned their attention to Matsui. Matsui was a key player on the NL Champion Colorado Rockies. After his failed tour of duty with the NY Mets, he has played well enough over the last year and a half to increase his stock significantly. With Michael Bourn leading off, and Kaz Matsui most likely batting second, the Astros would be increaing their team speed.
The Rockies & Cubs remain interested in Matsui.
